Thanks, PDub!

Let's start with the pleasant stuff.

My hat is coming along nicely:

And we hosted a wildly successful potluck last night, if I do say so myself. One of my roommates made Pioneer Woman's pasta with tomatoes and artichoke hearts, and the other roommate made Special K bars. I made PW's wild rice and corn casserole, and an apple crisp, and some hot cider.

Wild rice and corn casserole, about to go in the oven.

Artichoke and tomato pasta sauce cooking in the back; cider with mulling spices in front.

One friend made these delicious onion-tomato-cheese pastry tartlets.

Another friend made this beautiful apple cake. No one wanted to take the first piece because it was so pretty.

This morning I got up and cooked some more - I made another wild rice and corn casserole, because I had the ingredients on hand, and I made Pioneer Woman's acorn squash too. They go well together.

Acorn squash. Can a squash be adorable? I think this one is. Doesn't that orange splotch look like a heart? And, this squash was free! Sort of. Some good friends moved away and left me their fall CSA share (that's Community Supported Agriculture), which I've been picking up once ever two weeks. I've never been part of a CSA before - I was a little worried that I was going to end up with six pounds of parsnips that I'd have no idea what to do with - but it has been full of lovely surprises, like this squash. How many more times can I type the word "squash"? Hmm...

Yes, I used that tiny knife to cut through a squash. My goal was to cut the squash in half without also lopping off my thumb and having to go to the ER, and I am glad to say: Mission Accomplished!

All hollowed out. I wasn't sure if you could toast squash seeds like pumpkin seeds, so I just threw them away. More investigation may be required if I make this again.

Ready to go...

Just out of the oven. All that liquified melted butter and brown sugar was almost too sweet (and I didn't even use maple syrup - I used some apple juice instead). Maybe some cinnamon or nutmeg or cloves would have helped cut down on the sweetness a little. But still - delicious.

You know what? Let's leave it at the pleasant stuff for now. But oh do I have some words for Time Warner...
